What is Optos?
The Optos is an advanced ultra-widefield retinal imaging system designed to capture a200-degree view of the retina in a single capture; this is approximately 82% of the retinal surface. The image can be captured in less than half a second,making the process quick and convenient for many patients.

Why is seeing more of the retina important?
Changes in the retina can sometimes develop without obvious symptoms. You may have no pain or notice no change in your vision, even when retinal changes are present.
With Optos,ultra-widefield imaging allows our optometrists to visualise 50% more retinal area than conventional single-capture imaging devices. This wider field of view gives our optometrists additional information to consider alongside your symptoms, medical history and comprehensive clinical examination.
The Optos will help detect and monitor retinal eye conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, myopia retinal degeneration, and retinal detachments.

Monitoring Your Eye Health Over Time
Your eye health can change throughout your life.
High-quality retinal images can provide a useful visual record that may be compared with images from previous and future examinations. This can assist our optometrists in documenting and monitoring retinal findings and identifying changes over time.

What Can You Expect During an Optos Scan?
Optos retinal imaging is designed to be quick and patient friendly.
The imaging process is non-contact, and the retinal image can be captured in less than half a second. Our clinical team will guide you through the process and ensure you are positioned comfortably.
In many circumstances, ultra-widefield imaging can be performed without dilating the pupils. However, your optometrist will determine whether pupil dilation or additional examination is appropriate for your individual circumstances.
Is Optos a Replacement for an Eye Examination?
Ultra-widefield retinal imaging is an adjunct to, not a replacement for, a comprehensive eye examination.
Your optometrist considers the retinal image together with your vision,eye health history, symptoms and the findings from your clinical examination.Additional tests, pupil dilation, referral or further investigation may be recommended when clinically appropriate.
The purpose of the technology is to provide our optometrists with additional information to support the assessment and ongoing management of your eye health.
